The Nursing Department of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH) was established in 2012. In the ten years since, the Department has been constantly exploring new models of professional development, with a comprehensive quality management model, a scientific nursing teaching and research system, an innovative "one person, one plan” vocational training program, an intelligent nursing information system, a branded professional nursing service; and a patient-centered holistic nursing model. The Hospital has efficiently completed the work of its 57 nursing units concerning human resource management, nursing quality audit, continuing education and scientific research, developing an integrated mode combining nursing teaching and research management. Aiming to "build the highland of the Bay Area and reach the summit internationally", bearing in mind its original aspiration of "excellence, innovation, trust and care", the Nursing Department guides over 1,000 nurses’ efforts on the clinical front line, providing high-quality nursing services to Shenzhen’s citizens and supporting the health of the populace.
Under the leadership of the Nursing Department, the nurses’ morale remains high, and they develop rapidly, registering excellent performance as they complete the Hospital’s development tasks of various stages. During the Hospital’s ACHS certification and “Triple A Grade” evaluation, the nursing team’s high performance was acknowledged by experts. In 2020, the Nursing Department won the Hospital Management Awards Asia "Excellence in Patient Safety Award”. This was the second consecutive year in which it received a prize in this competition, after winning the Hospital Management Award Asia “Excellence in Nursing Award" in 2019.
In summer 2012, the glistening mangroves called us;
In summer 2022, it was Shenzhen's bright lights.
High-quality development enters a new chapter
As the saying goes, even a skyscraper’s foundation is situated in the ground. In 2022, the Central Nursing Department is once again forming an excellent core leadership team. With a foundation of cooperation, support and trust, and an awareness of care, responsibility and dedication, we are working together to mobilize team members. The Hospital’s enthusiasm and initiative is opening a new chapter in high-quality development.

The Nursing Department is implementing the "One Department, One Brand" project to promote evidence-based nursing and holistic care. This includes the family-integrated care model for neonatal intensive Care (FI Care), the oncology holistic care model integrating “1+N+m” medical community linkages with Hong Kong characteristics, the nurse-led surgical wound management model, and the all-department emergency nursing service model paired with the Hong Kong emergency triage model, along with other characteristic nursing brands, and is exploring the construction of a high-quality nursing service standards system compliant with international standards.
Another focus is digital development, including the accelerated promotion of "Internet + nursing", applying 5G technology in integrated smart wards for mobile nursing, vital signs monitoring, wireless infusion monitoring, mobile ward rounds, remote consultation and remote surgery, to create “unaccompanied wards” (wards in which patients need not rely on family members for basic care).
Learning from Hong Kong's experience in ward management, the Nursing Department is innovating to develop management systems, service models and operation mechanisms for these unaccompanied wards, and establish a new ecology for nursing with a human touch, improving the standards for and increasing nurse allocation, and improving the operation of logistics support systems and clinical support centers, in order to truly realize the goal of "returning time to nurses, and nurses to patients".
Concerning specialist nurse training, the Nursing Department is in contact with international specialist nurse training platforms and resources, such as the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and the School of Nursing of the University of Hong Kong. Combining Hong Kong-style nursing concepts and specialized nurse training models with mainland practices, the Nursing Department is exploring the establishment of a specialized nurse training system with advanced international features and Chinese characteristics, and constructing a specialized nurse training brand with Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area characteristics.
The motto "self-confidence, active learning, critical thinking, health and happiness" sums up HKU-SZH Nursing Department’s aspiration for each of its nursing staff, and the practices to which the department has been adhering. Always open and inclusive, it provides a platform within which the personality of every nurse can shine. Full of vigor, and striving for progress and excellence, HKU-SZH Nursing Department is taking responsibility for its own development, seizing opportunities for adaptation to medical & health reform and social & economic development, and striving to build a nursing brand of excellence, as it takes great strides into the new era.
