Nursing Team of the Central Operating Theater
Guardian Angels under Shadowless Lamp
The Central Operating Theater (COT) owns a devoted, rigorous, principled and innovative nursing team with a total of 107 nurses. Nearly two-thirds of the nurses have BSN or higher degrees in nursing. In 2021, with the proportion of major (class III, IV) surgeries stepping up year by year, more than 20,000 procedures covering over 20 surgical specialties and various anesthesia methods were performed.
The COT is divided into phase-I and phase-II areas. Occupying about 9000m2, the phase-I area is located on the 4th floor of the out-patient medical building with 42 operating rooms in total, of which 10 are class-100 laminar flow clean rooms and 11 with radiation-proof design. The phase-II construction is under planning, and will have 12 major operating rooms which are all radiation-proof.
On September 21, 2012, the first operation was completed in the day-time surgical center. The first section of phase-I area was put into use on January 16, 2013. The second section of the phase-I area was launched on March 30, 2017. On January 7, 2021, the 4th generation of da Vinci robot made a debut in surgery. By the end of 2021, a total of 32 operating rooms had been in use.
On September 21, 2012, the first operation was performed in the day-time surgical center. Section I of the COT phase-I Area launched on January 16, 2013.
After nearly 10 years of development, the COT has developed into a large-scale, advanced, and high-level modern comprehensive surgical platform in Guangdong province. On this platform, the first adult cardiac surgery, da Vinci robotic surgery, and congenital heart surgery were successfully performed in July 2020, January 2021, and July 2021, respectively. In August 2021, functional nerve deep brain stimulation (DBS) and Stereotactic electroencephalogram electrode implantation (SEEG) were performed using the O-arm X-ray machine. The first case of MCGR (magnetically controlled growing rod) implantation in mainland China was performed in 2021 under the Hong Kong and Macao Medicine and Equipment Connect policy.
There is a series of procedures among the first in the mainland or Guangdong province:
In 2014 -- ALPPS + Whipple procedure
In 2015 -- 5mm Unilateral incision bilateral sympathetic trunk nerve resection
In 2016 -- Single-port bronchial sleeve resection of lung cancer
In 2017 -- ECMO support for a 10-month infant , an 800g neonate’s gastrointestinal perforation repair
In 2018 -- Cryoablation for early breast cancer in China
In 2021 -- Mainland China’s first magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR) implantation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
Da Vinci robotic surgery and the first MCGR implantation.
Highlights and Honors
Problem-based continuous quality improvement management model:
Quality Control management and safety culture are highlighted.
Daily feedback is collected and followed up by an assigned group.KPIs are monitored constantly. Steady improvement results were maintained in each indicator, such as the correct handling of surgical specimens, the effective control of the incidence of pressure injuries in surgical patients, and the rate of the first case on-time start(FCOTS) increased from 52% in 2017 to 84% in 2021. Our team carries out varied CQI activities vigorously, and won excellent achievements in hospital competitions (a silver award in 2019, a gold award in 2020).
Honors received over the years:
Shenzhen Excellent Nursing Group Award in 2012
First prize of Guangdong province surgery position competition in 2016
First prize of the 2nd Guangdong Provincial Operating Room Nursing Skills Competition in 2017
First prize of the Shenzhen Operating Room Nursing Knowledge Competition in 2018
Excellence Award of the Guangdong Operating Room Nursing Management Innovation Project in 2019

Clinical Teaching and Training
Workshops and Continuing Education Programs:
Every year, we hold 1-2 workshops or 1-2 provincial/municipal continuing education training courses. Among these courses are "Basic Theory and Practical Skills of Laparoscopic Surgery", "Theory and Practical Skills of Anesthesia Nursing", "Perioperative Prevention of Skin Injury" and standardized training about Positioning Surgical Patients and Setting Sterile Table.
We have been in touch with domestic and foreign counterparts to share experiences and participate in forums.
Communication Activity
As a pioneer of healthcare reform and a rising star in the medical field in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, we serve as a window to the outside world. The COT has visitors from all over the world, including domestic and international experts and scholars, journalists from well-known media outlets in Hongkong and Guangdong.
Charity Events
We have organized ten cleft lip and palate mission events and provided surgical treatments to more than 350 children since June 2015. At present, the Hospital has regularized the mission event.
Activities
The nursing job is fast-paced, risky, and working overtime is common. However, all these do not prevent the team from actively participating in activities in their spare time.
The COT nursing team and the nursing team of the Anesthesiology Department stood out among 30 competing teams and won the top award in the hospital’s singing competition themed "My Heart Sings to the Party" on July 1st, 2021.
According to the concept of green healthcare, the nursing team of the COT has been striving to improve the treatment quality and patients’ safety in the past decade. Guided by evidence-based principles, while using AORN (The Association of Operative Registered Nurses) guidelines and the “Operating Room Nursing Practice Guidelines” as the main references, the COT nursing team will make unremitting efforts to continuously improve our knowledge and skills in order to achieve the goal of our hospital.
Central Sterile Supply Department:Infection Control Pioneer and Health Guard
The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) provides cleaning and sterile service of recyclable medical instruments and items for the hospital. It owns 2,200 square meters of building area and 2 specialized elevators directly connected to the Operation Room. With 7 automatic cleaning and disinfection machines and 11 sterilizers as well as data collecting system and closed-loop instrument traceability system, the CSSD can meet the needs of high quality and rapid development of the Hospital.
The CSSD adopts the management mode of Hong Kong University, with administrative staff as the major staff members, and nurses account for only 17% of the total staff members. CSSD is mainly responsible for quality monitoring, training and infection control. It applies “one person, one plan” program of the Nursing Department by providing consistent, personalized and systematic training programs to each employee according to their working experience, education background and capability to improve their core ability. CSSD ensures the cleaning and sterile quality of the recyclable medical instruments, which alleviates problems caused by shorthandedness. With the current rapid workload growth, the CSSD can process over 2,400,000 sets of instruments annually. CSSD was awarded the best model of CSSD of Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control among the first several hospitals in China in 2020. It has obtained remarkable achievements in scientific research and teaching with 5 national patents, 1 product patent and the second prize of innovation in nursing awarded by the Chinese Nursing Association. We aim to promote the construction of regional third-party setrile supply center to meet the needs of the surrounding medical institutions. We believe that under the leadership of the Nursing Department and the Hospital, we can do better, go further and the CSSD can have a more brilliant future.
